NEIL: It’s freezing they make you. Y’understand? Debby lets me stay her place.

Max looks at Debby, who shrugs.

MAX: You pick strangers up off the street?!—

DEBBY: I knew you were gonna say that . . .

MAX:—let them stay in your home? Debby Debby Debby, you sleep with this boy?

DEBBY: Oh, Daddy . . .

MAX (Over “Oh, Daddy . . . ”): Who knows where he’s been? Don’t you hear what’s going on with people like this?

DEBBY: What, you never slept in the dirt?

LOLA (To Neil): You have family?

Neil looks to Debby for support.
